    Tuesday, March 13 @ 3:00 (presentaton at 3:30)

Author, Duncan O'Brien has a lifelong connection with Matson Line ships. His parents met on the S.S. Monterey sailing from San Francisco to Hawaii and Australia in 1962. He fondly remembers his own childhood voyages aboard the famous "white ships". It is these memories that inspired the story in Matson the Mouse.

Duncan lives in Victoria with his wife and two children.

Matson the Mouse is based on the real-life Matson Line passenger ships that once sailed between San Francisco and Hawaii. The main character is a curious young mouse from San Francisco with a love of big ships and a yearning for adventure. One day, while searching for his Hawaiian friend Sprecks the Seagull, Matson accidentally stows away on board the liner S.S. Lurline as it sails across the Pacific to Honolulu. Along the way, Matson explores the big, beautiful ship, he makes new friends, and discovers the meaning of "aloha". The story ends as the sun sets on Waikiki Beach, setting the stage for future adventures and travels. The book concludes with a page of "Fun Facts for Keiki", with short descriptions about some of the actual historical references in the story.
