Sacred Heart Community Service Book Drive

boy reading “What an astonishing thing a book is. It's a flat object made from a tree with flexible parts on which are imprinted lots of funny dark squiggles. But one glance at it and you're inside the mind of another person, maybe somebody dead for thousands of years. Across the millennia, an author is speaking clearly and silently inside your head, directly to you. Writing is perhaps the greatest of human inventions, binding together people who never knew each other, citizens of distant epochs. Books break the shackles of time. A book is proof that humans are capable of working magic.” -Carl Sagan

Join Hicklebee's in an opportunity to give a child a chance to read this holiday season. Drop new books off at Hicklebee's and we'll see they become gifts to children who need them.

In partnership with Sacred Heart Community Service.

About the Sacred Heart Holiday Program:

  • The deadline to drop of books at Hicklebee's is December 21st.
  • New books for children 0 - 12 are needed.
  • Books for young children in Spanish or bilingual Spanish/English are especially helpful.
  • The goal is to provide books for 6,500 children this Christmas.

"Since 1964, SHCS has provided critical support to working poor families in our community. Our strategy involves stabilizing our neighbors in need, giving them the tools to make a better life for themselves, getting the community involved."

If you have any questions about the program, please email Cynthia Towle.

Facts about family literacy and why books are an important part of any home:
  • Low literacy is cyclical and is passed from one generation to the next.
  • Children from families with low literacy are 50% more likely not to be literate.
  • For many of the families, the donated children’s book is the first book in their home library.
  • Reading aloud to children is one of the most important ways to ensure literacy.

Short on time? We're happy to select books we know will be treasured. Let us know the ages and gender of the children you'd like to benefit.
