Authors, including a lot of kidlit creators, have been holding virtual events to benefit Bay Area independent bookstores during the time of coronavirus. This Friday, join Kate Messner, Sarah Kuhn, and Shannon Doleski for an hour of readings at noon on Zoom. The event is being hosted by Maggie Tokuda-Hall, author of the new young adult novel The Mermaid, the Witch and the Sea. Join the event by registering here, and your donation of any amount will go, in its entirety, to Hicklebee's.
Kate Messner, who writes both fiction and nonfiction, has created award-winning picture books, easy readers, chapter book series, and novels. A New Yorker, she visited Hicklebee's earlier this year in launching the novel Chirp, and her newest book is the nonfiction The Next President.
Sarah Kuhn, who lives in Los Angeles, is the author of four Heroine Complex novels--a teen series starring Asian-American superheroines. Her award-nominated, romantic comedy set in Japan, I Love You So Mochi, is newly out in paperback. She also writes short fiction and comics, including Shadow of the Batgirl and an upcoming Star Wars audiobook about Doctor Aphra.
Debut author Shannon Doleski, a former English teacher and swim coach, lives with her husband, three children, and two dogs wherever the Air Force sends them; it's currently West Texas. Mary Underwater, a novel for middle graders, is about a Joan of Arc-inspired girl who builds a submarine.
